New Software versions, new functionality!

CleanSweep Version 2.0 was officially released at Ocean Business 2007, with inclusion of these new features:

3D Swath viewer featuring sidescan images draped over bathymetry, profile/point/surface rendering modes, multi-profile editor, sun illumination and vertical exaggeration.

Export of geocoded targets to a database for sharing targets between CleanSweep projects.

Multilayer interactive mosaic engine for user-selectable swath placement, layering and editing with loaded nautical charts under the mosaics.

Selectable export options for exporting multiple images or grids with the same options allowing better comparison between multiple surveys in the same location, saving export set-up and processing time.

GeoDAS 6.0 new features, along with existing tools like real-time mosaic creation and client-server mode, make GeoDAS a powerful data acquisitioning tool for hydrographic surveys.  Features of GeoDAS version 6.0 include the following:

Survey Management Package for design, editing and execution of survey run lines.

Chart Support for loading raster and vector nautical charts behind mosaicked data with full control of chart background, objects & transparency.

Smart Sonar for automated tuning of both sensor and data display.

OIC Software Adds Google Earth Support

Oceanic Imaging Consultants, Inc., announces support in GeoDAS for Google Earth! With new support added for geocoded data to be exported in .kml format, you can see your sidescan and/or bathymetry data displayed at the exact location on Earth (Google Earth that is) the hydrographic survey took place! GeoDAS now supports exporting of geocoded KML files. Simply select the KML option when exporting, and post the results to anyone with Google Earth enabled. Check our website for updates and Google Earth-friendly downloadable sidescan and bathymetry files!

September 2006

Oceanic Imaging Consultants Inc., completed sea-trials in late August for the new Generic Digital version of its geophysical data acquisition software, GeoDAS-GD.  This new release differs from previous versions of GeoDAS in its ability to support multiple sensors from within one installation.  Current sensors supported by GeoDAS‑GD include the Teledyne-Benthos SIS-1624/25™, C-MAX CM2™, DSME Utech S-150™, EdgeTech 4200™, Imagenex Yellowfin™, Klein 3000/5000™ and the new Teledyne-Benthos C3D™ bathymetric imaging system.

Support Multiple Senors

The GeoDAS-GD software was used in Orange Beach, Alabama from August 25 to August 27, 2006 during system trials for NAVOCEANO (U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office), utilizing Teledyne‑Benthos, EdgeTech and Klein sidescan sonars back to back over a purpose‑built target range in the Gulf of Mexico.  Targets ranging in size from 5-gallon buckets to fish-traps measuring 2 feet per side, were arranged in a line in water depth of approximately 15 meters, and imaged at ranges from 25 to 150 meters, at speeds from 4 to 10 knots.

GeoDAS-GD provided a common control, logging and display interface to all the sonars, allowing unbiased comparison of performance via a common presentation interface.  The OIC Extensible Record Format automatically accommodated variations in the raw sensor data dynamic range, efficiently accommodating 8, 12, 16 and 24-bit data without arbitrary compression/clipping or waste of storage space.

GeoDAS-GD supports all standard features of GeoDAS, including control, logging, processing, targeting, databasing and real-time mosaicking, plus new SmartSonar™ auto-tuning and auto-targeting tools.

Oceanic Imaging Consultants Adds Support For Teledyne Benthos

Oceanic Imaging Consultants Inc., has today certified for release the latest version of its geophysical data acquisition software, GeoDAS, for use with both the Teledyne Benthos C3D and Teledyne Benthos 1600 Series sidescan systems. The new GeoDAS release supports acquisition, real-time processing and display of both imagery and bathymetry from the C3D system, as well as the sidescan (CW or Chirp) and sub-bottom from the 1600 Series.

The GeoDAS software and C3D sonar were used this past month in the mapping of the so-called "Ordnance Reef" off the west coast of Oahu, as part of a DoD/NOAA effort to characterize a known munitions disposal area. The survey team, consisting of members from NOAA's National Marine Sanctuary Program, National Marine Fisheries Service, Teledyne-Benthos and OIC, mapped an area of 4 square KM in water depths from 5 meters to 50 in two 10-hour days, producing a 50 cm resolution bathymetric map, and a 10 cm resolution sidescan mosaic. The sidescan imagery was in subsequent days continued to deeper waters, using the new dual-frequency Teledyne Benthos SIS1624 sidescan, adding another 4 square KM, and covering targets in waters from 50 to 100 meters depth.

Support for the new Teledyne Benthos sonars is available in a specific release of GeoDAS-TBI (Teledyne-Benthos, Inc.). For further information, please contact OIC at info@oicinc.com.

OIC has just completed sea-trials on GeoDAS-SDV, our new navigation, mapping and obstacle avoidance system, tailor-made for swimmer delivery vehicles. GeoDAS-SDV uses a waterproof GPS to acquire initial position fixes at the surface, then updates navigation data once the vehicle is at depth by using information from an integrated Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) and compass. For mapping, GeoDAS-SDV can be equipped with single or dual-frequency sidescan, while for obstacle avoidance, a forward-looking sector-scan sonar is incorporated. Users view the data on twin SVGA screens, and interact with the system via a custom-built pair of 6-button touch-pads, allowing control of range, gain, display mode and zoom. Hardware options include user-selection of sidescan and forward-look sonars. Software options include ROVer's Eye for 3-D real-time visualization in the survey, real-time mosaicking of sidescan or forward look data, and display of survey track or mosaic over electronic nautical charts (DNC, S-57, BSB, Transas, etc.).

GeoDAS-PC News. OIC releases SmartSonar! Take the guess-work out of optimally tuning your sonar and multibeam. Under funding from CEROS (Centers for Excellence in Research in Ocean Science -) OIC has developed SmartSonar, the latest update to our GeoDAS software package. SmartSonar uses proprietary algorithms to automatically adjust sensor range and gains, allowing collection of optimally tuned raw sonar data, free from any clipping or saturation, even under wide variations in seabed geology. Display tuning is now also automated, providing optimal image correction and contrast enhancement in real-time. In addition, SmartSonar's automatic target detection algorithms determine possible target locations during surveying, and alert the user. These tools dramatically simplify the survey data acquisition process, and assure greater overall quality control.

Bermuda Biological Station for Research, Inc. To make room for the arrival of their new, larger research vessel, the Bermuda Biological Station has contracted OIC to perform a high resolution route survey in the waters around St. George, Bermuda. OIC and BBSR staff performed the survey, using GeoDAS-LT and the Imagenex YellowFin tri-frequency digital sidescan, producing decimeter-scale fully geo-coded imagery for the survey area in two days.
